Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then located numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report early analysis indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
