Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
