EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
